SOP for Handling and Usage of Hazardous Chemicals

Learn how to write a standard procedure for handling & usage of hazardous chemicals in quality control laboratory.

1. PURPOSE

The purpose of this SOP is to describe the procedure handling & usage of hazardous chemicals to avoid any accident.

2. SCOPE

This procedure is applicable for handling & usage of hazardous chemicals of Quality Control laboratory.

4. PRECAUTIONS

When handling materials or products, wear security equipment such as gloves, a mask, protective clothing, and safety glasses.

5. RESPONSIBILITIES

5.1 Executive, QC is responsible for receiving, handling & usage of hazardous chemicals.

5.2 Senior Executive/ manager of the QC department is responsible for checking the procedure.

7. PROCEDURE 

7.1 The following categories and symbols on chemical labels indicate which substances are deemed harmful.

7.2 Use protective equipment exclusively while handling dangerous chemicals, such as safety goggles and hand gloves.

7.3 Avoid touching the container when the chemicals are being poured out or syphoned.

7.4 Use a vacuum or suction bulb to pipette the solution.

7.5 Use extra caution to ensure the following while making a diluted sulfuric acid solution.

7.6 The ether should not be used near flames and should be handled carefully, much like chemicals.

7.7 Use an ice bath to first chill the aqueous solution. Stirring continuously, gradually include sulfuric acid into the mixture. Never carry out the reverse process.

7.8 Keep combustible liquids and materials away from direct sunlight or electrical sparks.

5.9 Handle hazardous substances in accordance with the MSDS file that is kept in the Quality Control Department’s approved location.

5.10 Follow SOP to clean up any spills that occur.
